8 Things to Know About the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017

The 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show took over Shanghai this week with special events and celebrity guests, all culminating in the brand’s runway show. Every Victoria’s Secret Angel walked the runway, except for the pregnant Behati Prinsloo, and the musical guests included Harry Styles, Miguel, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jane Zhang. Here, the eight must-know facts about the 2017 VS Fashion Show.

Candice Swanepoel Opened the Show

After giving birth to her son, Anacan, just over a year ago, Candice Swanepoel returned to the Victoria’s Secret stage today. The South African model opened the show wearing a plaid look designed by Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing complete with black and red feather wings and a studded belt.

The Show Was Divided into Six Sections

As always, the VS show was divided into themed sections. This year, the brand opened with the “Punk Angel” group, featuring looks by Balmain, followed by a “Goddesses” section that saw models channeling Greco-Roman deities with gold laurel wreaths and ornate gold-leaf wings. (Bella Hadid fans, take note: The youngest Hadid sister walked in this section twice.) The VS Pink section was themed “Millennial Nation” and was followed by the colorful “Winter’s Tale” group. The “Porcelain Angel” collection echoed the blue-and-white designs of Ming dynasty vases, and the show closed with a multicultural “Nomadic Angels” section that touched on traditions from cultures around the world.

Balmain Debuted Its Exclusive Designs

After months of speculation, Balmain’s looks for the VS show were revealed on the runway today. Creative director Olivier Rousteing channeled a rocker spirit, showing studded, plaid, and embellished ensembles worn with Victoria’s Secret x Balmain underwear that will be available in VS stores this week. In what might be a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show first, models like Stella Maxwell and Martha Hunt wore full leather jackets on the runway.

Karlie Kloss Returned

After a three-year hiatus, Karlie Kloss returned to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show today. Now with platinum blonde hair, Kloss walked in two sections of the show, “Punk Angels” and “Winter’s Tale,” taking turns in a red tartan cape and a silvery jacket with blue flower wings.

Alessandra Ambrosio Walked Her Last Show Ever . . . Maybe

Rumors are swirling that Alessandra Ambrosio will retire her angel wings this year. The veteran model, who’s walked in 17 consecutive Victoria’s Secret shows, took two runway passes this year, dressed in a punk outfit by Balmain and a “Nomadic Angels” look that featured enormous feathered wings. During her last runway walk, she blew a big kiss to the audience, a gesture some have interpreted as her goodbye.

Harry Styles Opted for Monochrome Suiting

Expecting some floral suiting from Harry Styles? Think again. The pop star wore two monochrome suits for his VS Fashion Show performance. The first was a black double-breasted Gucci suit with velvet trim that he paired with a very-appropriate pink shirt. Afterwards he changed into a pale mint suit by Givenchy by Clare Waight Keller with a matching shirt.

The Pink Section Got Even More Athleisure-y

Accompanied by Chinese pop star Jane Zhang and a cabal of backup dancers, the Pink models strutted out in tiny puffer jackets and track pants in bright colors—not just pink! For the second year in a row, Grace Elizabeth opened that section, this time wearing an inflatable letter P like a backpack.

Lais Ribeiro Killed It in the Fantasy Bra

Where else does a gold leaf and sapphire-adorned Fantasy Bra belong than in the “Goddesses” section? Lais Ribeiro wore the out-of-this-world number with a laurel wreath crown.
